When Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig team up, it’s nothing short of pure comedic joy — and Fox knows it. Per Variety, the network has ordered a straight-to-series animated comedy starring the “Bridesmaids” duo.
Created by Emily Spivey, “Bless the Harts” follows a group of broke Southerners striving to achieve the American Dream. As detailed in the press release, “what they don’t realize is that they’re already rich, in friends, family, and laughter.” “Rough Night’s” Jillian Bell and Ike Barinholtz (“The Mindy Project”) have also signed on.
Spivey has previously worked with Rudolph and Wiig on “SNL,” Rudolph’s variety show “Maya and Marty,” and Wiig’s heist comedy “Masterminds.” She created NBC’s Christina Applegate-starrer “Up All Night” and most recently worked on “The Last Man on Earth.” Spivey will serve as an exec producer, as will Wiig.
“Emily Spivey has the uncanny ability to observe the simplest qualities of everyday life, framing together bold characters and hilarious stories built around warmth and heart,” said Fox President of Entertainment Michael Thorn. “Having grown up in a close-knit southern family, she has a deep well of material that has inspired her to create this show, with a phenomenal cast headlined by Kristen, Maya, Jillian, and Ike.”
Wigg has been keeping busy since receiving a writing Oscar nod with Annie Mumolo (“Bad Moms”) for their “Bridesmaids” screenplay. Her current projects include “Where’d You Go, Bernadette,” starring Cate Blanchett, “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” and Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984.” She has also signed on to exec produce and star in Paramount’s English-language remake of Maren Ade’s “Toni Erdmann.”
Rudolph currently stars in Amazon’s “Forever.” Created by Matt Hubbard and “Master of None’s” Alan Yang, the series sees Rudolph and Fred Armisen as a married couple suddenly thrown into an unexpected journey that forces them to reexamine themselves — and each other — along the way. Rudolph also stars in Netflix’s upcoming “Wine Country,” Amy Poehler’s directorial debut.
“Bless the Harts” will premiere sometime during Fox’s 2019-2020 season.
