Kristin Scott Thomas, Daisy Ridley, and Nina Hoss will confront the horrors of war and its aftermath in “Women in the Castle,” an adaptation of Jessica Shattuck’s 2017 New York Times Bestseller. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Written and directed by Jane Anderson, the film will take place amidst “the ruins of WWII Germany,” and is described as a “heart-wrenching and hopeful tale of secrets, survival, and the astonishing power of forgiveness. Three women, bound by their past and clinging to each other for a future, must grapple with the realities of liberation from the Nazis, and face the consequences of decisions they cannot undo,” the source hints.
Anonymous Content’s Rosalie Swedlin (“The Wife”) and Doreen Wilcox Little (“Mapplethorpe”) are among the project’s producers. Embankment is exec producing.
“Women in the Castle” is slated to shoot in early 2021.
“One of Jane’s great talents is to reveal the inner emotional lives of women and in gifting those revelations to actresses, allowing them to deliver award-winning, timelessly memorable performances,” said Swedlin. “And in Kristin, Daisy, and Nina we have the cast to do exactly that.”
“Women in the Castle” marks Anderson’s feature directorial debut. She most recently penned the screenplay for 2017 Glenn Close-starrer “The Wife,” a drama based on Meg Wolitzer’s novel of the same name. She received two Emmys for “Olive Kitteridge,” another adaptation of a woman-penned book. Frances McDormand led the HBO miniseries inspired by Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer-winning novel.
Thomas was last seen in “Military Wives” and “Fleabag.” A five-time BAFTA nominee, she’s known for her Oscar-nominated role in “The English Patient” and titles such as “Four Weddings and Funeral,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Darkest Hour.” She’s set to make her directorial debut with “The Sea Change,” a romantic comedy based on Elizabeth Jane Howard’s 1995 novel of the same name.
Ridley broke out with “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens,” and her credits since have included “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi,” “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” and “Ophelia.”
“Pelican Blood,” “Homeland,” and “A Most Wanted Man” are among Hoss’ previous credits.
