Lady Gaga is such a larger-than-life figure that at times we forget that there’s a real woman behind the intricate costumes and bring-the-house-down performances. This person — “the woman behind the performer” — is who we will get to know in Chris Moukarbel’s new Netflix doc, “Gaga: Five Foot Two.” The film is set to premiere in a few weeks at the Toronto International Film Fest, and will begin streaming on Netflix later in September.
The film, which will screen September 8 at TIFF, “pulls back the curtain” on the iconic artist. “Off-stage, in the studio, unplugged, and at home, audiences get an unguarded glimpse at Gaga through a series of personal highs and lows and the culmination of a year’s emotional journey,” the doc’s synopsis details. “From struggles with relationships to health issues, from finding solace in her inner circle to conquering her insecurities, ‘Gaga: Five Foot Two’ navigates the divide between life as a superstar and life as an everyday woman.”
Following “Gaga: Five Foot Two’s” TIFF premiere, Lady Gaga will perform a set for the screening’s audience.
The doc is produced by Heather Parry of Live Nation Productions, Bobby Campbell of Mermaid Films (also Lady Gaga’s manager), and Moukarbel. Lisa Nishimura, Kim Ray, Michael Rapino, and Benjamin Cotner exec produced the project.
“I had a rare opportunity to create a portrait of an artist with such an open heart and mind,” Moukarbel (“Banksy Does New York”) said of his film’s subject. “I feel really lucky that Gaga trusted me and my vision.”
“The extraordinary personal access Lady Gaga gave us on ‘Gaga: Five Foot Two’ allows everyone to experience her fearlessness, vulnerability, and true devotion to her craft,” added Parry.
Lady Gaga is a six-time Grammy winner who has put out four solo albums and collaborated with Tony Bennett on another. She performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show earlier this year and, in April, became the first female Coachella headliner in 10 years. Also an actress, Lady Gaga has appeared on the last two seasons of “American Horror Story” and will topline a new remake of “A Star Is Born” alongside Bradley Cooper. The film, about a famous couple whose relationship is threatened when her career begins to outpace his, is expected to hit theaters in fall 2018.
“Gaga: Five Foot Two” will stream on Netflix beginning September 22, 2017. Check out the film’s artwork below.
