Laura Bispuri’s “Daughter of Mine” Acquired by Strand Releasing

“Daughter of Mine”: Tribeca

Strand Releasing has snagged North American rights to Laura Bispuri’s “Daughter of Mine” shortly after its U.S. debut at Tribeca Film Festival. The company also distributed Bispuri’s award-winning feature debut, 2015’s “Sworn Virgin.” Variety broke the news.

“Daughter of Mine” made its world premiere at the Berlinale in February. Set in Sardinia, the drama centers on an adopted girl (Sara Casu) “who is happy with her adoptive family, and is torn when her birth mother (Alba Rohrwacher) arrives one day. The girl must choose between two women, one who has lovingly raised her (Valeria Golino) and the other, a dissolute, free-spirited woman,” the source summarizes. Bispuri and her “Sworn Virgin” co-writer Francesca Manieri penned the script.

A release is planned for late summer or fall of this year.

“We’re thrilled to distribute this delicate and beautiful film,” said Strand Releasing’s Jon Gerrans. “Laura really showcases the talents of two amazing actresses in this finely tuned piece.”

Bispuri added, “I’m extremely happy to collaborate with Strand Releasing again and proud to be part of such a prestigious line up. We had a great welcoming at Tribeca and I look forward to sharing my journey into motherhood with an American audience.”

“Daughter of Mine” took home the Jury Prize at Hong Kong Film Festival.

Bispuri’s “Sworn Virgin,” the story of an Albanian woman who lives life as a chaste man to avoid marriage (per custom), then reclaims her female identity years later, won Tribeca’s Nora Ephron Prize and the New Directors Prize at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

“I would like to tell [female directors] to have courage. Society needs our courage,” Bispuri told us. “We must keep going out, telling our story, explaining our unique sensibility, our unique point of view, our dreams, our imagination. If you persist, you can do it. Never put your head and your heart in the sand like a lot of people would like you to do.”
