Lena Dunham is pushing her brand mightly well. To coincide with the premiere of her new HBO show Girls on April 15, Dunham has joined forces with BAM to curate a program of eight films entitled “Hey Girlfriend.”

She’s chosen some pretty cool films and has gotten some pretty cool guest to show up including Nora Ephron who will appear with Dunham following the screening of her 1992 directorial debut This is My Life starring the awesome Julie Kavner.

Here’s what Lena Dunham says about the films she picked: (not all the films are directed by women)

It’s no secret that there’s long been a dearth of realistic female relationships onscreen. Sure, we see girlfriends: getting drinks, spoon-feeding each other post-breakup Häagen-Dazs. We see mothers and daughters either forming inspirational alliances or being catty as beauty queens. But what of the female relationships we all know and love, inspiring in their tenacity and unparalleled in their complexity? Tender, acidic, vacillating shades of jealousy and support. I’m thrilled to work with BAM to curate a series of films with this kind of scope and insight into girl-on-girl action. Some classic, some underseen, some genre-fun. Coincidentally, these are the movies that made me want to make movies.

Here’s what program consultant Nellie Killian said about how they came up with this list of films:

Everyone at BAM is a big fan of Lena’s work and we were really excited when she agreed to partner with us to select a program of influences. While we were focused on movies about women from the beginning, the specific lens moved from unsympathetic women characters to toxic friendships, before eventually settling on female friendship in all its incarnations, which is a series I’ve wanted to do for years. The final line-up is really exciting and it’s a real testament to Lena that so many of the filmmakers are taking time out of their schedule to appear along side their films. As one of my friends said the other day, ‘this is such a nice counterpoint to the series on male friendship that is going on at least one theater in the city every day of the year.’

Highlights include: an April 3 screening of the classic Girlfriends directed by Claudia Weill who will be on hand for a Q&A and an April 5 screening of the The Last Days of Disco with Whit Stillman, Chris Eigeman and Lena Dunham participating in a post screening discussion.

Other films: Mullholand Drive; Times Square; The Craft; Clueless; Career Girls.
