Showtime is making itself at home in “The Chi.” Shadow and Act reports that Lena Waithe’s sprawling Southside Chicago-set drama will receive a second season. Series writer Ayanna Floyd Davis will also come onboard as showrunner in Season 2, succeeding Elwood Reed.
Created and exec produced by Waithe, “The Chi” recently aired its fourth episode, which reached “a 41 percent increase in viewership since the premiere.” Shadow and Act confirms that “The Chi” is Showtime’s highest-rated new series since “Billions.”
“From viewers and critics alike, the response to ‘The Chi ’has been so enthusiastic from the very start that our decision to renew the series was an easy one,” remarked Showtime Networks programming prez Gary Levine. “We love the vibrant characters and the nuanced world that Lena has created. Her vision for ‘The Chi’ has clearly struck a chord, and we know she has many more moving, personal, and resonant stories to tell about her beloved hometown.”
Starring an ensemble that includes Jason Mitchell (“Mudbound”), Tiffany Boone (“The Following”), Alex Hibbert (“Moonlight”), and Jacob Latimore (“Detroit”), “The Chi” follows the interconnecting lives of individuals living in the South Side of Chicago. The main event that links the characters together in Season 1 is the discovery of a body.
In 2017 Waithe became the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing. She received the prize for co-writing the “Master of None” episode “Thanksgiving,” which sees her character, Denise, slowly come out to her friends and family over the course of two decades.
Before getting her breakthrough role on “Master of None,” Waithe wrote for series like “Bones” and “Hello Cupid,” worked as “Love & Basketball” director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s assistant, and produced indie darling “Dear White People.”
Floyd Davis wrote “Ghosts,” the third ep of “The Chi.” She has previously worked as a writer and producer on series including “Empire,” “Hannibal,” and “Private Practice.”
