YouTube star Lilly Singh boasts over 14 million followers on the streaming platform, and she’s poised to make plenty of new fans in the coming months. The comedian is “taking over [NBC’s] 1:30 a.m. spot currently occupied by ‘Last Call With Carson Daly,’ which will make her the only woman with a late-night talk show on a broadcast network,” The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
Set to debut in September, “A Little Late With Lilly Singh” is a half-hour program that will include in-studio interviews as well as pre-taped comedy sketches and segments.
“An Indian-Canadian woman with her own late-night show? Now that is a dream come true,” Singh said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to bring it to life on NBC, and I hope my parents consider this to be as exciting as a grandchild.”
Also an actress, Singh’s credits include HBO’s recent adaptation of “Fahrenheit 451” and box office hit “Bad Moms.”
“I’m so excited because I truly get to create a show from scratch,” Singh explained during a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” In contrast to her work on YouTube, Singh joked that the late-night show will feature “more than three staff members and my sound guy won’t also be an extra and won’t also write the scripts.”
“One of the most controversial things I’ve ever said was that I’m a feminist,” Singh has revealed. “To this day, anytime I talk about anything related to women’s issues, it’s probably the most backlash I receive.” She explained, “I think there’s still a certain level of intimidation and confusion that comes around a strong female voice.”
