“How to Get Away with Murder” actress Liza Weil has been added to the cast of feminist indie pic “Women Is Losers,” The Hollywood Reporter confirms. As previously announced, Lorenza Izzo (“The House with a Clock In Its Walls”) is starring in the drama, which marks Lissette Feliciano’s feature directorial debut.
Loosely inspired by Feliciano’s mother’s life, the Bowery Hills Entertainment feature is set in 1960s San Francisco and tells the story of a pregnant Latina teen. “Celina (Izzo) decides to keep her baby after her friend dies during an abortion attempt. As Celina faces the compounded obstacles of being a young single mother of color in 1960s San Francisco, she finds allies and mentors along the way,” the source summarizes. Feliciano penned the script.
Weil plays Minerva, “a woman whose world-weary experience in a patriarchal environment makes her seem initially critical of Celina.”
“Minerva and Celina will show us what happens when we reconnect the dialogue between women,” Feliciano explained. “Liza and Lorenza are going to breathe so much truth into that connection. I can’t wait for the audience to experience what a healthy relationship between women looks like.”
Also joining the cast is Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”), who is playing Celina’s friend and ally who helps her achieve her career goals.
Bowery Hills Entertainment’s Andrea Chung (“Seoul Searching”) is producing “Women Is Losers,” and Izzo and Feliciano are among its exec producers.
Feliciano’s credits include shorts “Better Off Alone” and “With Children.” She is a member of the Alliance of Women Directors.
