“Lizzie McGuire” Creator Terri Minsky Gets New Series Order on Disney Channel

Hilary Duff as “Lizzie McGuire”: Disney

The Disney Channel has ordered to series a new coming-of-age series called “Andi Mack” from “Lizzie McGuire” creator Terri Minsky, TV Line reports.

“The single-camera sitcom,” the site writes, “which marks Minsky’s first project at the cable network since the Hilary Duff vehicle came to an end in February 2004, will chronicle the life of Andi Mack (newcomer Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a tween whose life is turned upside down when unpredictable older sister Bex (‘Zombie Apocalypse’s’ Lilan Bowden) returns home and forces her to question everything she’s ever known.”

Deadline went into more detail with the plot, writing, “The story introduces Andi as she’s about to celebrate her 13th birthday. She’s eager to have a little teenage fun and adventure — just a little — but that might never happen because her strict mother is doing everything in her power to keep Andi from turning out like her older sister, Bex. As a teenager, Bex dropped out of school, left home and now, in her late 20s, still doesn’t know what she wants out of life. But when Bex returns home and swears she is ready to get her life together, Andi’s life is turned upside down.”

Folks online have speculated that the character of Bex is gay, which would add more LGBT representation to the family network. The Disney Channel introduced its first gay male characters earlier this year on “Gravity Falls.” A lesbian couple appeared in 2014 on “Good Luck Charlie.”

The series will also feature Lauren Tom as Andi’s mother, Celia, and is set for a fall, 2017 premiere.

Minsky was nominated for a WGA Award for “Lizzie McGuire.” She also created ABC’s “Less Than Perfect,” and “The Geena Davis Show,” and developed “Finding Carter” for MTV.
