“The Farewell” hits theaters later this week, and it looks like we won’t have to wait long for writer-director Lulu Wang’s follow-up. A press release announced that she’s set to helm “Children of the New World” with Big Beach and Votiv.
Based on Alexander Weinstein’s short story collection of the same name, the sci-fi pic’s plot details are being kept under wraps. The book is set in the near-future, and deals with social media implants, virtual reality games, and robots. Wang is penning the script for the adaptation.
“I could not have made ‘The Farewell’ without my fantastic producers at Big Beach, so I’m looking forward to this new collaboration, with them and Votiv, to continue exploring the evolving dynamics of family,” Wang commented.
“The Farewell” premiered earlier this year at Sundance to rave reviews. Inspired by an actual lie, the comedy centers on a family that decides not to tell their grandmother she’s terminally ill. “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout Awkwafina stars. The pic, which currently boasts a 100 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has already collected a number of honors on the festival circuit, including Sundance London’s Audience Favorite Award and Atlanta Film Festival’s Audience Award. You can catch it in theaters this Friday, July 12.
When we asked Wang her advice for women directors, she said, “Remember that you are a director. Period. It’s important to mine your personal experiences to hone your particular perspective of the world, but never let the adjectives put you in a box.”
