“Served Like a Girl” director Lysa Heslov has booked her next project. She’ll follow up her award-winning doc about female veterans with an adaptation of Marieke Nijkamp’s hit YA novel “This Is Where It Ends” for the Gotham Group. Published in 2016, the multi-perspective story centers on a school shooting in Alabama. The Sourcebooks title spent 67 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Deadline broke news of the film.
“When I read ‘This Is Where It Ends,’ I knew immediately it was a timely and immensely important piece,” Heslov said in a statement. “I feel passionately that this is a story that desperately needs to be told … and I am so excited to dig in.”
“In writing ‘This Is Where It Ends’ Marieke Nijkamp gave rise to what is unfortunately a very real and relevant issue. In doing so, she also created a safe space for teens and adults to discuss gun violence, bullying, and the many faces of love,” added Dominique Raccah, Sourcebooks CEO and publisher. “I’m so grateful to The Gotham Group and Lysa Heslov for seeing the significance of this story and helping it reach an even larger audience.”
“Providing more opportunities for women has become my passion,” Heslov told us at SXSW 2017, where “Served Like a Girl” made its world premiere. “I think with the recent election we have woken the tiger inside of all of us and are no longer afraid to fight for what we believe in. We don’t have time for petty bullshit any longer,” she said. “We are united, strong, and will not be stopped. This core belief encompasses all areas of our lives.”
