Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson are reuniting. The “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” collaborators are teaming up on another high profile project, a female-led “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie for Disney. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Set to be penned by Hodson, the feature is in “early development” and “is not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise that had pirate Jack Sparrow at its center, but rather a wholly original story with new characters under the ‘Pirates’ moniker, itself inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland.” Robbie will star.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide across five pics.
A two-time Oscar nominee, Robbie has scored nods for “Bombshell” and “I, Tonya.” Her upcoming projects include “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig’s live-action story based on the iconic doll, and “Marian,” an action pic about Maid Marian from Robin Hood folklore.
Hodson broke out with 2018 Hailee Steinfeld-starrer, “Bumblebee,” a “Transformers” spin-off that took in over $467 million worldwide. Her other credits include “Shut In” and “Unforgettable.” She wrote “The Flash,” currently slated for release in 2022, and is signed on to pen a live-action “Batgirl.”
In 2019 Robbie and Hodson’s respective companies, LuckyChap Entertainment and Hodson Exports, joined forces to create the Lucky Exports Pitch Program with the aim of bringing women writers the exposure and experience they need to be considered for studio jobs.
“Female characters in movies are often relegated to a box of being this easily defined, simple thing — of just being ‘the hot one,’ or ‘the artsy one,’ or whatever it is,” Hodson told us. “I want [my niece] to grow up in a world where the characters on screen are like her. Where they are nuanced and complex, and have these different sides to them.”
