Margot Robbie has lined up yet another producing project. The “I, Tonya” actress will produce “Firefighters,” a film about the real-life female inmates who took on California wildfires, via her LuckyChap Entertainment shingle. Deadline broke the news.
“Firefighters” is based on last summer’s New York Times Magazine feature “The Incarcerated Women Who Fight California’s Wildfires.” Jaime Lowe’s piece detailed how a group of women transitioned from prison to a Malibu fire camp. The film will follow the women who,”with only three weeks of training … must bind together not only to fight devastating blazes, but also their own personal demons and a system that seeks to keep them invisible. It is a task they signed up for, and get paid $2 an hour [for] to risk their lives,” Deadline summarizes.
“Firefighters'” script will be penned by Carly Wray. The “Westworld” writer-producer recently signed on to co-write an HBO anthology series based on “Cat Person” author Kristen Roupenian’s upcoming book. Wray is also writing a “Game of Thrones” spinoff.
Robbie is producing with LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Tom Ackerley. Automatik and Good Films are producing as well. A director hasn’t been announced. No word on whether Robbie is planning to star.
LuckyChap produced Tonya Harding biopic “I, Tonya.” Robbie took on the titular role and earned an Oscar nod for her performance. The company’s upcoming credits include Robbie-starrer “Dreamland,” about a teen bounty hunter, a Shakespeare TV project told from the female characters’ perspectives, a women-driven Wall Street series, and “Marian,” a film about the Robin Hood character. Harley Quinn-centric “Suicide Squad” spinoffs “Gotham City Sirens” and the Cathy Yan-helmed “Birds of Prey” are also on LuckyChap’s docket.
Robbie’s recent screen credits include “Goodbye Christopher Robin” and “Terminal.” You can catch her next as Queen Elizabeth I in Josie Rourke’s “Mary Queen of Scots.” The historical drama sees Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) plotting to take the thrown from her cousin, the Queen. The pic hits theaters December 7.
