“Pretty doesn’t matter. It’s just a tool that women use,” says Melissa McCarthy in the first trailer for “The Kitchen.” Set in the ’70s, Andrea Berloff’s adaptation of the comic series sees the two-time Oscar nominee using all of her tools and teaming up with Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss to become the most powerful mobster in Hell’s Kitchen.
Kathy (McCarthy), Ruby (Haddish), and Claire (Moss) begin their journeys on the sidelines. It’s only when their husbands are locked up and cash runs out that the trio discover that they’re capable of more than anyone can imagine. Dismissed and discarded, the women set out to prove that those who believe they’re “never going to do anything but have babies” wrong.
Watch the trailer to see Kathy, Ruby, and Claire run the neighborhood despite warnings that they’ll be “wiped off the face of the earth.”
“The Kitchen” marks Berloff’s feature directorial debut. She also penned the script. Best known for co-writing the Oscar-nominated screenplay for “Straight Outta Compton,” her other writing credits include “World Trade Center” and “Sleepless.”
You can catch “The Kitchen” in theaters August 9.
