Best known for “Chewing Gum,” an E4 comedy about a religious and reluctant virgin, Michaela Coel is set to tell another story with sexuality at the forefront, though this one more serious in tone. The BBC has announced a new series from the “Last Jedi” actress. She’ll star in and write “Jan 22,” which will explore “the question of sexual consent in contemporary life and how, in the new landscape of dating and relationships, people make the distinction between liberation and exploitation,” according to Deadline.
The London-set story follows Arabella (Coel), “whose raw and personal experience of consent sits at the heart of the story. Through Arabella we meet a group of fictional friends and colleagues whose sexual adventures frequently collide with a world in which new codes of sexual practice are emerging.”
Coel is among the project’s executive producers.
Just a couple of weeks back a trailer was released for “Black Earth Rising,” an eight-part BBC Two/Netflix series that sees Coel playing a law investigator who was rescued as a child during the Rwandan genocide. A premiere date hasn’t been announced. The BAFTA winner also stars in “Been So Long,” an upcoming musical about a single mother that’s currently in post-production.
Coel will reprise her tole as Tracey in Season 3 of “Chewing Gum,” but there’s no word a premiere date just yet. She revealed that she was sexually assaulted while writing the series when she delivered the MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival yesterday. She also described how a producer sexually harassed her. “We have one very clear message in our industry: this has to change,” she said. “This will require all of us working together, establishing professional workplaces, calling out inappropriate behavior and – most importantly – listening to and supporting anyone who has experienced harassment.”
