“Military Wives” is the latest film heading to VOD earlier than originally planned. Deadline confirms the Kristin Scott Thomas-Sharon Horgan dramedy will launch on “premium VOD in the UK” on Friday, March 27. The pic hit theaters in the United Kingdom on March 6.
Based on a true story, “Military Wives” sees a group of women forming an on-base singing club while their partners are deployed to Afghanistan. It earned about $3 million, or 2.6 million pounds, before theaters in the UK closed last week. Zygi Kamasa, CEO of Lionsgate, the film’s studio, said the move to VOD would “continue to make ‘Military Wives’ available to consumers.”
“Military Wives” was scheduled to open in the United States on March 27, but due to the theater closures and the bans on public gatherings, it has been pushed back to May 22. The film made its NY premiere during the 2020 Athena Film Festival, which wrapped up earlier this month. Rachel Tunnard (“Adult Life Skills”) and Rosanne Flynn (“The Labyrinth”) penned the script.
“The Perfect Candidate,” Haifaa Al Mansour’s portrait of a young Saudi doctor who decides to run for municipal council, is also hitting VOD in the UK this Friday, instead of its planned theatrical opening. “Birds of Prey,” “Emma.,” and “The Invisible Man” are among the other films that have been released on VOD early due to the coronavirus.
