MTV Is Rebooting “Daria”

"Daria"

Daria Morgendorffer will deadpan once more. According to Variety, the iconic ’90s cartoon “Daria” will receive a reboot at MTV’s new production unit, MTV Studios. “Inside Amy Schumer” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Grace Edwards has signed on to update the series, which centers on the caustic, combat boots-rocking titular high schooler.

The reboot, tentatively titled “Daria & Jodie,” will follow Daria and original series supporting character Jodie Landon, a young black woman. “These two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender, and race,” the reboot’s synopsis details.

While we’ll miss hanging out with Jane Lane, Daria’s bestie and partner in sarcasm in the original cartoon, the new series’ focus on Jodie is welcome. She’s one of the smartest characters in “Daria’s” world, but never feels one-dimensional. In a relative rarity for pop culture then and now, Jodie was a black character who embraced her blackness — yet she was never solely defined by it. Jodie talked openly and honestly about the pressures and struggles of being one of the few black individuals in her white, suburban world. In fact, since “Daria’s” 2001 conclusion, Jodie has established a legacy that rivals the lead character’s.

The original “Daria” was created by Susie Lewis and Glenn Eichler and premiered in 1997. Tracy Grandstaff (Daria), Wendy Hoopes (Jane/Quinn/Helen), Jessica Cydnee Jackson (Jodie), and Julian Rebolledo (Jake) were among the show’s voice actors. The character of Daria first appeared as a supporting player on “Beavis and Butt-Head.”

Edwards’ other credits include “Broad City,” “Loosely Exactly Nicole,” and “Ugly Americans.”

“MTV has the biggest collection of hit youth franchises that spans more than three decades of content and over 200 titles, part of which have fueled our resurgence,” said Chris McCarthy, president of MTV. “With MTV Studios, we are for the first time ever opening up this vault beyond our own platforms to reimagine the franchises with new partners.”

Alongside “Daria,” one of the reimaginings is a live-action remake of MTV’s sci-fi anime series “Aeon Flux.” Executive produced by Gale Anne Hurd (“The Walking Dead”) and Jeff Davis (“Teen Wolf”), the project is about an assassin who joins forces with biohackers to take down an oppressive regime.

The “Aeon Flux” series aired from 1991 to 1995. Karyn Kusama directed a big screen adaption in 2005 with Charlize Theron in the lead role.
