Naomi Ekperigin is bringing the Turner Family’s story to the small screen. She is writing “The Turners,” a half-hour single-camera comedy inspired by the real-life family of doctors. As Deadline reports, the project has received a script commitment with penalty at ABC.
In “The Turners,” “a close-knit family of black doctors” is thrown off-balance when their recently retired parents decide to go back to work. “Now, three siblings at the height of their success are forced to work alongside their parents, and assert their independence everywhere from the emergency room to the living room,” the source teases.
Based in Houston, the real Turner family includes Dr. Rod J. Turner, who runs his OB/GYN practice, Health Solutions of Clear Lake, with his wife, Roslyn. She also works as an ultrasound sonographer and office manager. Their son, Dr. RJ Turner, is a second year family medicine resident at the Texas Medical Center. Daughters Rachel and Angelique are studying medicine at Tulane and McGovern, respectively.
Ekperigin is executive producing “The Turners” with Damon Wayans Jr. and Wilmer Valderrama. Kaitlin Saltzman, Jessica Avevedo, and Kameron Tarlow are co-executive producing. The project hails from CBS Television Studios.
Earlier this year, Comedy Central put “How to be a Couple,” the pilot Ekperigin created with her partner Andy Beckerman, into development. No word on whether the project about an interracial workaholic couple is moving forward.
Also an actress and stand-up comedian, Ekperigin’s screen credits include “Single Parents” and “Alone Together.” She’s written for “Broad City,” “Mrs. Fletcher,” and “Great News,” and hosts podcast and live comedy show “Couples Therapy” with Beckerman. You can see her next in Apple TV+’s “Mythic Quest.” The premiere date for the video game industry-set comedy is TBD.
