Audiences may be reuniting with Genovia’s royal family: a new “Princess Diaries” movie is in the works at Disney. Deadline confirmed the news.
Penned by “Supergirl” alumna Aadrita Mukerji, the film will mark the third installment of the franchise based on Meg Cabot’s YA book series of the same name. It is “understood to be a continuation of past story, rather than a reboot,” per the source.
So far, there’s no word about whether Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, the stars of “Princess Diaries” and “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” will reprise their roles in the threequel, but the odds are looking good: Hathaway recently said that she would “more than entertain” the possibility of playing Mia again, and was in fact “pulling for it.”
Released in 2001, “The Princess Diaries” tells the story of Mia Thermopolis, an awkward teen in San Francisco who is shocked to discover that she is the heir to the throne of a European kingdom. Her estranged grandmother (Andrews) helps prepare her for life as a royal. The film grossed over $165 million worldwide. Gina Wendkos (“Coyote Ugly”) wrote the script.
Penned by “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes, the film’s sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” hit theaters in 2004 and saw Mia graduating college and returning to Genovia for her coronation. It took in more than $134 million globally.
Debra Martin Chase (“Harriet”) produced the first two pics and will return for the third. Melissa K. Stack, the screenwriter behind Jillian Bell-starrer “Godmothered” and “The Other Woman,” is exec producing.
“The Princess Diaries” marked Hathaway’s breakout role. She went on to score Oscar noms for “Rachel Getting Married” and “Les Misérables,” winning for the latter. The “Devil Wears Prada” star’s latest film, “Armageddon Time,” a coming-of-age story about two boys living in Queens, is now in theaters.
A three-time Oscar nominee, Andrews won for “Mary Poppins” and landed nods for “The Sound of Music” and “Victor/Victoria.” She plays Lady Whistledown in “Bridgerton.”
