Nicole Riegel’s feature debut has found a home. IFC Films acquired North American rights to “Holler,” a coming-of-age drama led by “End of the F*cking World’s” Jessica Barden. A press release announced the news.
Based on Riegel’s short of the same name, “Holler” is set in Southern Ohio and tells the story of a young woman who joins a dangerous scrap metal crew in order to pay her way to college.
“When I was a high school senior, I had a meeting with my guidance counselor. She told me that I would probably never go to college, and it was one of the most discouraging things that I think can happen to a young person,” Riegel explained in our exclusive “Holler” featurette. The writer-director emphasized, “I want multiple generations to see this film and leave the film wanting to encourage girls to dream and have more.”
“Nicole Riegel’s beautiful cinematic voice is an instant powerhouse — she has created a visually stunning, personal, and singular vision of American life with empathy and passion,” said Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films.
Riegel added, “‘Holler’ has been an enduring labor of love that I’ve poured many years of my life into, and I am so thrilled that my first film has found a passionate and caring home in IFC Films. Arianna and her amazing team have consistently taken chances on bold women and their stories, and I’m honored to be a part of that continuity.”
“Holler” has screened at Deauville Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and Nashville Film Festival, among other fests. The pic is slated for release this June. Pamela Adlon and Becky Ann Baker co-star.
Barden’s other credits include “Better Things,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” and “Penny Dreadful.”
