Nisha Ganatra is singing another tune. The “Late Night” helmer is currently in post-production on “Covers,” a romance set in the Los Angeles music scene, and now word comes that she’s attached to direct a feature about an Indian boy band. Deadline broke the news.
Inspired by the teenage years of Savan Kotecha, a Grammy-nominated music producer and songwriter who has worked with Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande, among others, the untitled pic was just sold to Universal.
International pop stars seem to be having a moment in Hollywood: Rebel Wilson and Paula Yoo both recently announced K-Pop-themed projects.
Ganatra’s “Late Night” hit theaters earlier this year. Based on Mindy Kaling’s experiences as a writer on “The Office,” the comedy sees an iconic late-night host (Emma Thompson) hiring her first female writer (Kaling). Her next pic, “Covers,” is slated to hit theaters May 8. Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross star.
“Black Monday,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” and “Better Things” are among Ganatra’s TV credits. She made her feature directorial debut with 1999’s “Chutney Popcorn.”
Ganatra is under an overall deal with ABC.
“’Make a feature before you leave film school’ was the best advice I’ve received,” Ganatra told us. “The worst advice I got was to ‘make a movie with all white characters’ to show that I could ‘direct movies with white people.’ I mean, ‘Charlotte’s Web’ was not written by a pig, so WTF?”
