Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy are teaming up and likely saving the world in the process. The pair are close to signing a deal that will see them playing superheroes in Netflix feature “Thunder Force.” Deadline broke the news.
Though specifics are being kept under wraps, the story reportedly centers on “the two stars getting superpowers.” Ben Falcone, McCarthy’s husband and frequent collaborator, is writing and directing, and he and McCarthy are among the project’s producers.
Spencer and McCarthy were both recognized at this year’s Oscars. The former exec produced Best Picture winner “Green Book” and the latter received a Best Actress nod for playing literary forger Lee Israel in Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” She previously received a nomination for her supporting role in “Bridesmaids.” A three-time Supporting Actress nominee, Spencer won in 2012 for “The Help.” She also scored nods for “Hidden Figures” and “The Shape of Water.”
You can catch another female-led superhero story in theaters now: Brie Larson-starrer “Captain Marvel,” directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Other women-centric superhero pics in the works include Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” and Cate Shortland’s standalone Black Widow story.
Among Spencer’s upcoming projects are a Netflix limited series about Madam C.J. Walker, America’s first black, self-made female millionaire, horror pic “Ma,” and an Apple series exploring the nation’s fascination with true crime stories.
Up next for McCarthy is “The Kitchen.” Written and directed by Andrea Berloff, the mob drama co-stars Elisabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish.
