Olivia Wilde is branching out. After making her feature directorial debut with teen comedy “Booksmart” and signing on to helm an untitled holiday comedy for Universal, she’s set to take on another genre. The “Tron” actress will step behind the camera for psychological thriller “Don’t Worry, Darling,” Variety reports.
Described as “a psychological thriller for the Times Up era,” the pic will tell the story of a “1950s housewife whose reality begins to crack, revealing a disturbing truth underneath,” the source hints.
Wilde is re-teaming with “Booksmart” co-writer Katie Silberman on project. The pair are also collaborating on the aforementioned holiday comedy. Both are producing “Don’t Worry, Darling,” which hasn’t landed at a studio yet.
In theaters now, “Booksmart” tells the story of overachieving BFFs (Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever) on a mission. On the eve of their high school graduation, the pair begin to fear that they’ve been letting life pass them by and resolve to catch up on all the fun they’ve missed out on in the span of one night. The pic boasts a 97 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“I kept thinking about how, when there are rated-R comedies starring women, often you’ll hear dialogue written for guys put in the mouths of female characters,” Wilde said of the film. “And so people can say, ‘This is so great. They’re joking around like dudes — women are funny!’ Well, that’s bullshit because women are funny in a very different way.”
“A Vigilante” and “Life Itself” are among Wilde’s recent acting credits.
