Less than one out of every six features screened in the major programs at the 67th Locarno International Film Festival (August 6–16) will be directed by a woman.
Of the 56 films playing at the Piazza Grande (“films with a powerful impact), in competition (Concorso internazionale), in competition as first or second works (Concorso Cineasti del presente), or as part of the Signs of Life sidebar (for experimental films), a paltry nine are from female filmmakers.
As previously announced, Agnes Varda will receive a lifetime achievement award from the festival this year. A selection of her films will also be screened at Locarno. Also honored for their film work will be Juliette Binoche and Mia Farrow.
