The Oscar-winning co-director of “Brave” is entering the world of live-action filmmaking. Brenda Chapman’s first foray outside of animation will be “Come Away,” a prequel to two animated classics that have recently been released in live-action form, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Peter Pan.”
According to Variety, the script, penned by Marissa Kate Goodhill, is “based on the premise that the Alice and Peter characters were a brother and sister who had to deal with their older brother perishing in an accident and their parents’ despair over the tragedy — leading them ultimately to journey to Wonderland for Alice and Neverland for Peter.”
Former Paramount production president Michelle Manning (“Jenny’s Wedding,” “The Breakfast Club”) is taking on producing duties alongside Leesa Kahn (“Sanctum”) and Andrea Keir (“60 Minutes”). The trio commented, “Brenda is a true visionary and her previous experience in perfectly creating imaginary worlds with such precise detail is exactly what is needed to bring to life Marissa’s enchanting script, which explores the universal theme of the importance of family.”
“Come Away” will presumably be marketed to both children and adults. Making a film that serves both audiences can be tricky, but Chapman, whose “Brave” win in 2013 made her the first woman to ever win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, seems more than up for the task. She has said, “I just try to create something that feels true, have fun with it — and make it something that [grown ups and kids alike] can relate to. When I try to specifically target the different ages, it always comes off as forced to me. That’s just me — maybe other writers are cleverer than me. I go a lot by gut.”
