The Academy has confirmed which films have been submitted to the International Feature category for the 2020 Academy Awards. Of 93 titles from around the globe, 28 are directed or co-directed by women, amounting to 30 percent of the titles in the running. Women helmed or co-helmed 23 percent of submissions last year.
Features in the 2020 race include Sudabeh Mortezai’s “Joy” and Antonella Sudasassi Furniss’s “The Awakening of the Ants.” The former is representing Austria and tells the story of a Nigerian woman caught in the cycle of sex trafficking, and the latter, a portrait of a seamstress under pressure to give birth to a boy, is Costa Rica’s pick.
High profile titles such as Mati Diop’s Cannes winner “Atlantics” and Haifaa Al-Mansour’s political drama “The Perfect Candidate” are also among the entries, repping Senegal and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
A shortlist of 10 films will be announced on December 16 and Oscar nominations will be revealed January 13. The ceremony is slated for February 9.
