Patti Smith: singer, poet, artist, Twi-hard?
We jest, but it’s certainly refreshing to see the punk goddess defend the success and popularity of the much-maligned “Twilight” movies.
In a conversation with Kristen Stewart for Interview Magazine, Smith praised actors for their “grueling, thankless” work and told the erstwhile Bella Swan, “Never apologize for your work. If people don’t accept the ‘Twilight’ series for what it is, well, fuck them. Millions of people loved that series. It gave them something. It said something about love and honor.”
Smith also praised Stewart’s “Twilight” character and performance, noting, “[Bella] gives everything for love. And she goes as far as that will take her. But that straightforwardness you have, with a certain amount of restraint, even a little aloofness, it magnifies a certain aspect of the character.”
Stewart herself was a bit more reserved, calling at least one of Bella’s actions “retarded” (someone needs to go back to media-training school). But in the end, she, too, expressed satisfaction with her franchise work: “Anybody who wants to talk shit about ‘Twilight,’ I completely get it, but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, fucking proud of. My memory of it felt — still feels — really good.”
