Sometimes “And She Could Be Next” is a joy to watch, and sometimes it’s infuriating. Seeing so many women of color running and winning political races is incredibly exciting. Grace Lee and Marjan Safinia’s two-part “POV” docuseries shows the possibility of a world in which women candidates of color are taken seriously and win. Our world would and could be a much better place with inclusive voices at all levels of government.
But “And She Could Be Next” is also a reminder of just how far the white guys in power will go to maintain the status quo. They will throw people off the voting rolls. They will close polling places. They will put so many restrictions in place that make it too cumbersome, and practically impossible, to vote. They will challenge mail-in voting. Essentially, they’ll do anything and everything they can to make sure that people don’t vote. What kind of democracy are we living in when the goal of those in power is to suppress the people’s voices? That’s one of the main questions that is raised in “And She Could Be Next.”
The project also highlights Stacey Abrams. For those who do not yet know the politician, you will be introduced to a person of such integrity and fortitude. She has decided her life’s goal is to make sure that people who want to get to vote. Her election was stolen — that should make you sick to your stomach and inspire us all to save our democracy. Women of color have been the stalwarts of the Democratic Party and it’s about time that more of them were in power.
