Praise be: “Tuca & Bertie” has risen from the dead, and its resurrection is everything you’d hope and more. Adult Swim revived Lisa Hanawalt’s critically acclaimed animated series following its cancellation at Netflix, and the move has done nothing to slow down the narrative’s delightfully demented momentum. Season 2 doesn’t skip a beat in reuniting us with our favorite loud-mouth toucan and anxious song thrush as they get into all sorts of shenanigans.
As funny, heartfelt, and visually inventive as ever, “Tuca & Bertie’s” second season continues to dig deeper into the psychology of the 30-something bird BFFs at its center and their relationship. We follow along as the pair navigate Tuca’s sobriety and Bertie’s search for a therapist to help her cope with anxiety attacks.
“Tuca & Bertie” has always been a joyful celebration of female friendship, but Season 2 sees the pair confronting whether their codependency is holding them back. Asked if she’s in love with Bertie, Tuca says, “It’s way deeper than that. She’s my best friend.” The first few episodes of the season suggest that Tuca is beginning to wonder whether the intensity of their friendship may actually be a hindrance the pair’s development as individuals.
The show’s breakneck pace and dazzling color palette make it impossible not to be swept away in this immersive world — and I’m so grateful to be welcomed back into it. Here’s hoping for a more secure future for this gem.
“Tuca & Bertie’s” second season premieres on Adult Swim June 13.
