Another reason to get excited about Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company: it will be run by women. According to Deadline, producers and film execs Priya Swaminathan and Tonia Davis will serve as co-heads. Qadriyyah “Q” Shamsid-Deen, formerly of Ryan Murphy Television’s Half Initiative and Nina Jacobson’s studio Color Force, has been appointed a creative executive.
Swaminathan previously oversaw Annapurna’s film development slate. She has developed and produced doc projects such as “Very Young Girls,” “30 for 30’s” and “The Birth of Big Air.”
Davis has been Chernin Entertainment’s VP Film since 2015. Her producing credits include Amy Schumer-Goldie Hawn mother-daughter comedy “Snatched,” musical “The Greatest Showman,” and upcoming action-thriller “Underwater.”
“With Higher Ground Productions, we hope to bring people together around common values and uncommon stories — and Priya, Tonia, and Q are precisely the people to bring that vision to life,” declared Barack Obama. “They’re masterful storytellers. They’re veterans in the industry. And they not only bring their unique perspectives and life experiences to every project, but they’re committed to finding new voices who have their own stories to tell.” He added, “Michelle and I couldn’t be more excited about the team we’re assembling.”
“Our goal isn’t just to make people think — we want to make people feel and reach outside of their comfort zone,” explained Michelle Obama. “With their thoughtfulness, creativity, and empathy, we know that Priya, Tonia, and Q will find the common thread within every story to inspire us to be something more. I’m thrilled about this team as professionals — and as people,” she said. “They’re wonderful.”
Under its multi-year deal with Netflix, Higher Ground will produce films and series telling inspirational stories. No word on its project slate yet.
