Our favorite crazy ex-girlfriend is set to play the mother of the Antichrist. Rachel Bloom will follow-up her beloved CW musical series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” with “Mother Mary.” Pop TV just ordered a pilot for the comedy, which the Emmy and Golden Globe winner will produce and act in. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Described as “a modern-day, comedic spin on the biblical story of Mary,” “Mother Mary” is based on an Upright Citizens Brigade web series of the same name. The show explores “what happens when the most irresponsible and lazy human on Earth is impregnated by immaculate conception,” THR hints. Betsy Sodaro (“Another Period,” “Disjointed”) toplines “Mother Mary” and is co-writing its pilot. She’s also among the project’s exec producers.
“The overall production deal we have with the Devil hasn’t born any fruit to date, but when he pitched this show with Rachel Bloom attached, we just couldn’t say no,” Justin Rosenblatt, executive vp original programming and development at Pop TV, said Monday in a statement. “We think ‘Mother Mary’ is a clever comedy that offers a lot of life lessons that are filled with heart through smart storytelling imparted through Betsy’s hilarious and irreverent sense of humor.”
Bloom is also set to write the lyrics and music for a new Broadway musical inspired by the “The Nanny,” the ’90s sitcom starring Fran Drescher.
Pop TV snagged “One Day at a Time” following Netflix’s cancellation of the critically acclaimed comedy. The fourth season of the Justina Machado-starrer will debut on Pop TV March 24.
