Midge is stepping away from the mic and hitting the road. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” breakout Rachel Brosnahan has signed on to topline Julia Hart’s next feature, “I’m Your Woman.” The Amazon Studios title tells the story of a woman who “must go on the run with her child due to her husband’s crimes,” Deadline reports. “Their lives become intertwined with a man and a woman, forming an unlikely partnership that teaches them more than just how to survive.”
Scheduled to go into production this fall, “I’m Your Woman” is penned by Hart and “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz, her husband. The latter will produce with Brosnahan.
Brosnahan has won an Emmy and two Golden Globes for her role as Midge Maisel on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Amy Sherman Palladino’s comedy about a ’50s housewife forging a career in standup comedy. Season 2 of the Amazon Studios series dropped in December of last year, and a third season is on the way. “House of Cards,” “Patriots’ Day,” and “The Finest Hours” are among Brosnahan’s other credits.
Hart made her directorial debut with 2016’s “Miss Stevens,” and most recently helmed Gugu Mbatha-Raw-starrer “Fast Color,” a sci-fi about a woman with supernatural powers that’s in theaters now. She’s in post-production on “Stargirl,” a coming-of-age pic about a a teen living in Arizona.
When we asked Hart her advice for other women filmmakers, she urged, “Tell female stories. I don’t know, maybe I’m not supposed to say that, but if we don’t, who will? Some of my favorite female characters were written by men,” she explained. “I’m not saying men can’t [write women]. I’m just saying, they’ve got men covered. They’ve got them covered in spades. So let’s tell a few stories about women while we’re here.”
