Rachel Goldenberg to Direct MGM’s “Valley Girl” Musical Adaptation

Rachel Goldenberg: Deadline

“Valley Girl” is coming back to the big screen. MGM is remaking the 1983 cult classic romantic comedy as a musical, and Deadline reports that Rachel Goldenberg (“The Mindy Project,” “A Deadly Adoption”) has signed on to helm the feature.

Directed by Martha Coolidge (“Madam Secretary,” “Sex and the City”), the original “Valley Girl” follows a teenage girl from San Fernando Valley “who begins to question the life she’s always known when she falls in love with a punk rocker from Hollywood,” Deadline summarizes. The highly quotable film starred Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman (“Beautiful Loser”).

Both Coolidge and Goldenberg have directed episodes of TBS’ “Angie Tribeca,” starring Rashida Jones. Goldenberg frequently directs and produces content for Funny or Die.

According to Deadline, Amy Talkington (“The Night of the White Pants”) penned the script for the upcoming musical version of the film. The project has been in the works for years, and other sources have indicated that Talkington’s script has been rewritten by Jenny Lumet (“Rachel Getting Married”). IMDb credits Lumet with the screenplay, with an “earlier screenplay” credit to Talkington.

“Valley Girl’s” soundtrack featured music from Bonnie Hayes, Josie Cotton, and Men at Work.

Coolidge has said that she fought for the cast of the original film to be more inclusive. “I wanted one of the four girls to be black, but the studio refused… so the next largest part of a valley girl I cast it black,” she revealed. “In our research, we would see valley girl contests and we would see black girls and say ‘Hi, I’m a valley girl, and I’m totally tubular, etc. etc.’ and I thought it was such a phenomenon… and that it should be in the movie. But I had to do the best with our circumstances.”

It’s been more than thirty years since the film was released, and Hollywood’s being called out for its racism now more than ever, so we’re betting the new “Valley Girl” will be more inclusive.
