Rachel Weisz is set to play a fellow Oscar-winning actress. She’s signed on to topline an Elizabeth Taylor biopic with Bert & Bertie attached to direct. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Described as “never-before-seen portrait of the real woman behind the violet eyes,” “A Special Relationship,” will “examine Taylor’s AIDS activism in the 1980s” and “explore Taylor’s journey from actress to activist through the lens of her friendship with her assistant Roger Wall,” the source details. The pic will depict how Taylor helped “create a public call to arms against ignorance, bigotry, and homophobia.”
See-Saw Films is producing.
Weisz won an Oscar for her supporting turn in “The Constant Gardener” and received a nod for “The Favourite.” A five-time nominee, Taylor took home trophies for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “BUtterfield 8.” She was also honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Taylor died in 2011.
Bert & Bertie premiered their most recent film, “Troop Zero,” at Sundance this year. The comedy co-stars Viola Davis and Allison Janney and tells the story of a group of misfit scouts. No word on a release date yet. The duo made their feature directorial debut with 2016’s “Dance Camp.”
“The best advice is that, as a filmmaker, you need to make sure that everyone on your team is making the same film,” Bert & Bertie told us. “It sounds simple, but if you have that, your team will follow you to the end of the galaxy.”
“Disobedience” and “Denial” are among Weisz’s recent credits. She’ll star alongside Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh in Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” standalone film, expected to bow May 1, 2020.
