Netflix is going into business with a recent Oscar winner and one of Time’s most influential people of 2019. “If Beale Street Could Talk” star Regina King has signed a multi-year first-look deal with the streamer, Deadline reports. The pact sees her producing films and series for Netflix via her Royal Ties production company, which will be headed by King’s sister, Reina King.
No stranger to working behind the scenes, King has over a dozen directing credits to her name, including episodes of “Insecure,” “This Is Us,” and “Scandal.”
“Regina King is a multi-faceted talent both behind and in front of the camera. She’s been a trailblazer for years, with boundless creativity and impeccable taste in projects, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will bring her formidable talents to Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer.
King added, “I am beyond thrilled to join the Netflix family. They are at the top of their game and as an artist I am so excited to come play in this wonderful sandbox they have created for storytellers.”
Back in February King won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her supporting role in Barry Jenkins’ James Baldwin adaptation “If Beale Street Could Talk.” While accepting the latter, she made a public pledge: within two years, women will make up 50 percent of the crew for projects she produces. King has said that women are “constantly hearing that they aren’t being hired for male-dominated positions because of lack of experience. We will have to push through the objections of studio executives who might turn down a woman by constantly reminding them that every person who has had success and every person who has a lengthy résumé had to have their first shot,” she emphasized. “We have to give more first shots.”
A three-time Emmy winner, King has been recognized for her acting on “Seven Seconds” and “American Crime.” You can catch her next in “Watchmen,” HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the beloved graphic novel. The series will premiere later this year.
