Renée Zellweger to Be Honored at Palm Springs Film Fest

Zellweger in "Judy": David Hindley/LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions

Renée Zellweger’s been a frontrunner in the Oscar race since “Judy’s” world premiere at Telluride in August. Her performance in the Judy Garland biopic has already earned her an Actress of the Year win at the Hollywood Film Awards and a British Independent Film Award nom for Best Actress. Now she’s set to receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). A press release announced the news.

“Renée Zellweger inhabits the essence of the iconic Judy Garland in ‘Judy.’ This is a layered performance that captures Judy’s trademark spirit, along with the heartbreak and insecurities she experiences in London while performing at a series of sold out shows,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “For this outstanding performance, a career best for Zellweger – and one in which she remarkably does her own singing — it is our honor to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress to Renée Zellweger.”

Previous recipients of the award include Cate Blanchett, Halle Berry, and Olivia Colman.

Zellweger will receive the honor at the fest’s Film Awards Gala, slated for January 2. The fest runs from January 2-13.

A three-time Oscar nominee, Zellweger took home the prize for “Cold Mountain” and received nods for “Chicago” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” “What/If,” “Here and Now,” and “Bridget Jones’s Baby” are among her more recent credits.

“Judy” is in theaters now. Set 30 years after Garland played Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” the pic takes place in the final months of the icon’s life. She’s struggling with addiction and preparing to perform to sold-out shows in London under mounting financial pressure.

“There was so much that was not allowed for,” Zellweger has said of Garland. “You’re not allowed to be human. There’s no room on the schedule for her sanity — the choices that were made for her and how she was exploited and … robbed, basically.”
