“Restless Creature: Wendy Whelan” has found a home. Abramorama has acquired the theatrical rights to the ballet documentary, the company announced in a press release.
Directed and produced by Linda Saffire and Adam Schlesinger, “Restless Creature” follows prima ballerina Wendy Whelan as she prepares to retire from the New York City Ballet after 30 years in the company. The documentary premiered at the 2016 New York Film Festival and screened at the Athena Film Festival earlier this month.
The film’s executive producer, Diana DiMenna, explained the inspiration for “Restless Creature” in a statement: “Watching Wendy going through the most difficult period in an artist’s career prompted me to ask her to let me document it,” she said. “I knew she was in crisis and needed to face very difficult odds.”
“Linda and Adam have been able to tell a rich and multifaceted story,” added Abramorama President Richard Abramowitz. “We are proud and honored to work with the filmmakers to bring [the film] out into the world.”
In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Saffire and Schlesinger discussed the universality of Whelan’s experience: “We all age one way or another. For some, turning 47 means coming to the most rewarding time in a career where experience and wisdom overshadows age,” they said. “For Wendy, turning 47 was beyond being aged out of normal ballet world, so she had to overcome enormous obstacles to not only continue as a dancer but to reinvent herself as an independent artist. That is incredibly inspirational.”
Saffire previously directed “Sporting Dreams” with Schlesinger, and the frequent collaborators are currently working on another documentary about Whelan.
“Restless Creature: Wendy Whelan” will hit Film Forum and the Elinor Bunin Theater in New York May 24, 2017. Los Angeles and other releases will follow.
