Hopefully this makes “One Day at a Time’s” cancellation sting a little less: the Peabody Awards are celebrating star Rita Moreno’s “indelible mark” on media. She will be presented with the Peabody Career Achievement honor at the May 18 awards ceremony in New York City, Deadline reports.
“Rita Moreno is a unique talent who has not only broken barriers, but whose career continues to thrive six-plus decades after her acting debut,” commented Jeffrey P. Jones, executive director of Peabody. “We are delighted to celebrate her many contributions to entertainment and media, as well as her passion for children’s programming and important social issues.”
Moreno portrayed matriarch Lydia Riera in Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce’s modern reboot of “One Day at a Time.” The series ran for three seasons on Netflix before being cancelled earlier this month. Her many notable credits include “West Side Story,” “The King and I,” “Oz,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Electric Company,” and “Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?” Among Moreno’s more recent credits are “Jane the Virgin,” “Elena of Avalor,” and the new “Carmen Sandiego.” Next, she is set to appear in and exec produce Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story.”
The Peabody will be just the latest prestigious prize on Moreno’s packed résumé. She won an Oscar for her supporting turn as Anita in “West Side Story,” a Tony for her work in “The Ritz,” a Grammy for “The Electric Company Album,” and two Emmys. Moreno has also received The Kennedy Center Honor for her contributions to American Culture, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Medal of Arts.
Peabody Award nominations will be unveiled April 9. Awards will be announced by category on April 16 (Documentary), April 18 (Entertainment/Children’s), and April 23 (News/Radio/Web/Public Service). The awards ceremony itself will take place May 18 in New York.
