“Rocks” claimed the top prize at this year’s British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama was named Best British Independent Film at the online ceremony.
Written by Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson, “Rocks” tells the story of Shola “Rocks” Omotoso (Bukky Bakray), a London teenager raising her younger brother (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu) solo when their mother abandons them. Terrified that their situation will be found out and they’ll be forced to separate, Rocks depends on the help and support of her friends to keep her household going and stay one step ahead of the authorities.
“Rocks” took home a total of five honors, including Best Casting (Lucy Pardee).
Rose Glass scored the The Douglas Hickox Award (Debut Director) for “Saint Maud,” her psychological horror pic about a nurse determined to save her dying patient’s soul.
The Best International Film Award went to “Nomadland,” Chloé Zhao’s drama about a woman in her 60s who moves into her camper van and travels across the American West in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Zhao recently made history as the most honored filmmaker in a single awards season.
