Rowan Blanchard is getting off the train and heading back to high school. The “Snowpiercer” actress and “Girls Meets World” alumna is set to topline an untitled coming-of-age pic for Hulu, per Deadline. Sammi Cohen is making her feature directorial debut with the project.
Written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, the film tells the story of an aspiring artist (Blanchard) “who is forced to join her high school track team, using it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she’s been harboring a long-time crush on. Later, though, she finds herself falling for an unexpected teammate, only then discovering what real love feels like.”
“Moana’s” Auli’i Cravalho, last seen in Netflix pic “All Together Now,” plays “an elusive track star who has always lived in the shadow of her twin sister.”
“It’s exciting to be making a movie that’s full of queer characters where the story isn’t about coming out,” Cohen said when the project was announced. “I love a coming out story, I have one myself. But this is a new kind of comedy and a fresh take on how we tell stories about queer kids in high school.”
Cohen’s credits include episodes of “Kingpin Katie” and “Foursome.”
