The CW’s DC Universe is getting more and more inclusive. As The Hollywood Reporter writes, Ruby Rose will take on the role of superheroine Batwoman (aka Kate Kane), an out lesbian, in the network’s December “Supergirl”/”Arrow”/”Flash”/”Legends of Tomorrow” crossover event. “Vampire Diaries” writer-producer Caroline Dries and The CW’s go-to DC series writer-producer, Greg Berlanti, are also working on a standalone Batwoman show.
The casting of Rose, who is a lesbian, comes after The CW publicly “made it a priority to cast an openly gay actress to take on the role.”
“Armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, [Kate Kane] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” the source details. “But don’t call her a hero yet — in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Dries will pen the script for the potential Batwoman series.
A few weeks ago The CW announced Nicole Maines will be portraying TV’s first transgender superhero on “Supergirl.” The actress and activist will play new series regular Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, whose powers allow her to foresee others’ deaths. In the original DC comics, the character is not specifically identified as transgender.
You can catch Rose next in “The Meg,” a killer shark horror flick in theaters Friday, August 10. “Orange Is the New Black,” “John Wick: Chapter 2,” and “Pitch Perfect 3” are among her previous credits.
