After exploring a glitch in the time-space continuum in “Russian Doll,” an unexpected romance between a serial cheater and a womanizer in “Sleeping with Other People,” and the world’s worst wedding party in “Bachelorette,” Leslye Headland is looking to put her unique spin on a beloved franchise. The writer-director has a new “Star Wars” series in the works at Disney+. Variety broke the news.
Headland is reportedly attached to write and serve as showrunner on the series, which sources say “will be a female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the ‘Star Wars’ timeline than other projects.”
Best known for her work as a co-creator, writer, director, showrunner, and exec producer of Natasha Lyonne-starrer “Russian Doll,” an Emmy-winning Netflix comedy that’s been renewed for a second season, Headland launched her career as a playwright. She made her feature screenwriting and directorial debut with 2012’s “Bachelorette,” a Kirsten Dunst-led dark comedy based on her play of the same name. She followed it up with 2015’s “Sleeping with Other People,” a subversive rom-com starring Alison Brie. Headland’s other writing credits include episodes of “Terriers” and 2014 feature “About Last Night.” “SMILF” and “Black Monday” are among her small screen directing credits.
Last year Headland signed on to direct “American Huckster,” a portrait of a hustler from Queens who lands at the top of FIFA, for HBO Films.
“A lot of people think that I’m trying to be shocking with my dialogue or subject matter. That’s not my goal when I go into a project,” Headland told us. “I focus on darker things or bad behavior or explicit dialogue because creatively I am more interested in my mistakes and why I made them than my good deeds and my achievements.” When asked her advice for other women directors, she said, “Take yourself seriously.”
