Prepare for “Gotta Get Up” to get stuck in your head again: “Russian Doll” is coming back. Netflix has renewed the critically acclaimed Natasha Lyonne-starrer for a second season, Variety confirms.
Created by Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland, the “Groundhog Day”-esque series sees Nadia (Lyonne) unable to survive her 36th birthday. After tragically dying at her party, the video game designer wakes up to re-live the party — and continue finding new ways to die.
“Russian Doll’s” debut season featured an all-female writing and directing team. Lyonne, Headland (“Sleeping with Other People”), and Jamie Babbit (“Girls,” “Addicted to Fresno”) helmed every episode.
The new season will consist of eight episodes.
“It feels as though a woman has to be actively fixing something or searching for the guy but rarely is she searching for her own soul,” Lyonne has said of female characters. “That’s usually of the luxury of straight, white men on film.”
Lyonne will reprise her role as Nicky in the upcoming seventh and final season of prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black,” set to hit Netflix July 26. “American Pie,” “Slums of Beverly Hills,” and “But I’m a Cheerleader” are among her feature credits. She has a supporting role in Alma Har’el’s “Honey Boy,” a drama loosely inspired by actor Shia LaBeouf’s life that hits theaters November 8. The pic takes place over the span of a decade and sees a former child star (Lucas Hedges) trying to mend his relationship with his alcoholic father (LaBeouf).
