Hulu’s got another Sally Rooney adaptation in the works. The streamer has given a straight-to-series order on “Conversations with Friends,” a half-hour drama based on Rooney’s 2017 best-selling novel of the same name. A press release confirmed the news.
Set in Dublin, “Conversations with Friends” tells the story of Frances and Bobbi, best friends and college students who form an intense connection with an older married couple who are prominent in the arts scene.
The project comes on the heels of Hulu’s breakout success with “Normal People,” a romance based on Rooney’s beloved 2018 novel. Hettie Macdonald directed six of the series’ 12 episodes.
Alice Birch, who wrote for “Normal People,” will serve as lead writer on “Conversations with Friends.”
“Sally Rooney perfectly and beautifully captures the complicated dynamics of relationships in her stories. After bringing that to life in ‘Normal People’ to an overwhelmingly positive response, we are honored to do the same with ‘Conversations With Friends,'” said Beatrice Springborn, VP Content, Hulu.
Other upcoming Hulu projects on our radar include “The Other Black Girl,” the story of a Black editorial assistant working at an overwhelmingly white publishing firm, and “Binti,” a sci-fi about a rebellious young woman who defies her destiny and rejects her family’s wishes to lead her community. The former is based on the novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris and the latter is an adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor’s novella.
