Sandra Oh and Awkwafina are set to make quite the dream team. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo will star as sisters in an as-yet-untitled Netflix comedy. They are also producing the project alongside Gloria Sanchez’s Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell.
Written and produced by Jen D’Angelo (“Workaholics”), the film centers on “a lonely recluse who has her life is upended when her train wreck of a sister vows to mend their relationship by helping her fulfill her lifelong dream: to be a contestant on her favorite game show.”
D’Angelo also wrote the forthcoming “Hocus Pocus” sequel. Her other credits include “Cougar Town” and “Solar Opposites.”
Oh stars as Eve Polastri in BBC spy thriller “Killing Eve,” for which she’s won a Golden Globe and received multiple Emmy nominations. The show wrapped up its third season this summer and has been renewed for a fourth. “Grey’s Anatomy,” “American Crime,” and “Sideways” are among Oh’s many notable credits. She picked up five Emmy nods for portraying Dr. Cristina Yang on the former.
“The Chair,” an academia-set Netflix dramedy co-created and run by Amanda Peet, is among the projects on Oh’s slate.
Awkwafina broke out with 2018’s “Crazy Rich Asians.” Her other credits include “Ocean’s 8” and “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” She won a Golden Globe for her starring turn in Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell.” She co-created the semi-autobiographical comedy series, “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” which premiered in January and will return for Season 2 on Comedy Central.
The multi-hyphenate has a slew of projects on the way, including animated pic “Raya and the Last Dragon,” a live-action “Little Mermaid” remake, and crime dramedy “Breaking News in Yuba County.” The rapper is also attached to Jude Weng’s action-comedy “Shelly” and “The Baccarat Machine,” the story of the best female gambler in modern history.
