Sarah Cooper, the comedian who has lampooned Trump’s incoherent COVID-19 ramblings via viral lip-synching videos, is getting her own Netflix special. Variety reports “Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine” will debut this fall. Natasha Lyonne is directing, and will executive produce with Maya Rudolph via their Animal Pictures shingle. Cooper and Paula Pell are also among the special’s EPs.
“Everything’s Fine” will feature short interviews, vignettes, and sketches, and will see Cooper and guests taking on “politics, race, gender, class, and other light subjects.”
Cooper has become a breakout star during the pandemic. Her first video, “How to medical,” which sees her pantomiming the president’s musings on ultraviolet rays and disinfectant’s effect on the virus, blew up on Twitter, TikTok, and other social media. Since its launch, she has released other videos including “How to grief” and “How to strong death totals,” appeared on “The Tonight Show” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and guest hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Cooper previously worked at Google. She published the viral “10 Tricks to Appear Smart During Meetings” Medium essay in 2014, and adapted it into a book, “100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings: How to Get By Without Even Trying.” She has also penned the book “How to be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings.”
Lyonne has previously directed episodes of “Russian Doll,” “Orange Is the New Black,” and “Shrill,” among other series. She, Rudolph, and Cirocco Dunlap are collaborating on Amazon animated series, “The Hospital.” Lyonne scored Emmy nominations for writing, producing, and starring in “Russian Doll,” the time loop dramedy she created with Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland. It has been renewed for a second season, with a premiere date TBD.
“Irresistible,” “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens,” and “Steven Universe” are among Lyonne’s more recent on-screen credits.
