Sarah Michelle Gellar’s coming back to TV. Famous for her ass-kicking titular role on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Gellar will play a character living under very different circumstances in “Sometimes I Lie,” an adaptation of Alice Feeney’s 2017 novel of the same name. In addition to starring, Gellar will exec produce the limited series, which is being developed by Ellen DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production and Warner Bros TV. Deadline broke the news.
The show will center on Amber, “a woman who wakes up in a hospital, unable to move, speak, or open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they don’t know she can. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. The timeline alternates between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago,” the source summarizes.
Robin Swicord is signed on to pen the adaptation. The Oscar-nominated “Curious Case of Benjamin Button” screenwriter’s other credits include “The Jane Austen Book Club,” which she also directed, “Memoirs of a Geisha,” and the 1994 Gillian Armstrong-directed version of “Little Women.” Swicord most recently wrote and directed 2016 Bryan Cranston-starrer “Wakefield.”
Since her iconic turn as a teenager tasked with saving the world from supernatural beings in “Buffy,” Gellar has gone on to star in two series: The CW’s “Ringer” and CBS’ “The Crazy Ones.” “The Grudge,” the “Scooby-Doo” franchise, and “Cruel Intentions” are among her feature credits.
