Scarlett Johansson kicked off the summer-movie season, which seems to begin earlier and earlier every year, on a high note this past weekend.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier broke April records with a $96.2 million haul, averaging $24,429 per its 3,938 screens. But those boffo numbers still only landed the superhero sequel in second place in terms of screen average.
Taking the top spot was Under the Skin, which grossed $140,000 on four screens, for a $35,000 average. The sci-fi thriller finds Johansson as an extraterrestrial predator hunting men in the Scottish hinterlands. Under the Skin claims the second-highest limited debut this year behind The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Johansson will hopefully follow up her box-office success with Chef (May 9) and Lucy (August 8).
Meanwhile, these numbers should make Marvel take a second pass at that Black Widow movie they keep insisting they won’t do.
