Crowdfunding and streaming platform Seed&Spark, diversity-focused company Color Farm Media, and entertainment/lifestyle network Black&SexyTV are joining forces to support creators of color in telling their stories. A press release has announced the launch of Keep It Colorful, a new program dedicated to making “a lasting and meaningful impact for creators of color today.”
Keep It Colorful’s highest priority is representation. The initiative is hosting an educational tour — featuring workshops, Q&As, and panels — through mid-July, and organizing educational events/voter registration drives for next month. Keep It Colorful has also vowed to help 50 pilots from creators of color get greenlit this year. The initiative will hold a crowdfunding rally, as well.
Beginning June 18 Keep It Colorful will accept submissions from creators of color with a series idea. Selectees will be able to raise funds via Seed&Spark and be eligible for prizes from Color Farm Media and Black&Sexy TV. The prizes total $25,000 and include matching funds for production and distribution.
“I’ve been in showbiz for three decades and I watched a New Majority of creators of color emerge. Now those creators, previously ignored and disposable, are valuable,” said Color Farm founder and actress Erika Alexander (“Living Single,” “Queen Sugar”). “We will help them learn the tools and techniques needed to tell their stories. And they will discover they have the power to change the world, forever.”
“There’s a lot of talk in the industry on how to solve the ‘diversity problem,’” added Seed&Spark founder and CEO Emily Best. “We’re coming together with one solution: getting work made by creators who have not yet had the chance to make it.”
