The mountains are calling Selena Gomez. The pop star and actress has signed on to topline “In the Shadow of the Mountain,” a biopic of trailblazing Peruvian mountaineer Silvia Vásquez-Lavado. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Based on Vásquez-Lavado’s upcoming memoir of the same name, the pic will recall how Vásquez-Lavado became “the first Peruvian woman to summit Mt. Everest and the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits, a challenge to climb the highest mountain on each continent,” the source details. The “victim of childhood assault and neglect” found “healing and power in mountaineering,” and has organized treks to Mt. Everest’s base camp “for other women who have endured abuse.”
Donna Gigliotti (“Hidden Figures”) is among “In the Shadow of the Mountain’s” producers. She described Vásquez-Lavado as a “force of nature” and her story as one of “resilience, courage, adventure, and humanity.”
Vásquez-Lavado’s book is slated for publication in winter 2022.
Gomez’s most recent album, “Rare,” dropped this January. “Lose You to Love Me,” “Hands to Myself,” and “Love You Like a Love Song” are among her biggest hits. The “Wizard of Waverly Place” alumna’s acting credits include “The Fundamentals of Caring,” “Monte Carlo,” and “Spring Breakers.”
